“People do not decide their futures; they decide their habit and their habits decide their futures.” F. Matthias Alexander.
This concept is well discussed in books and articles on personal development. The challenge is in developing the habits that align to your goals, whether they are personal or profession. Most of us know what we need to do to achieve goal. If you want to run a marathon, you have to train, you have to run! The challenge is holding yourself accountable to doing the work, consistently until it become habit. Most of set the bar to high, miss the mark and give up. The key is to start with a goal you can achieve, like run one day a week, until it is a habit and then increase until that is a habit, and continue the process and you will find you are moving closer to your goals. The other important factor is accountability. When things are for our own benefit we, particularly women, prioritize everyone else’s need before ours. All the more important it is to start with an achievable target and build as your habit develops. Accountability is like a muscle the more you use it the stronger it gets. Your goals are important and it is okay to create space to do the work to achieve them. You are a priority! You are worth the work!
